An area of saints and folk traditions
The "Palio del Cero", celebrated in Volterra around June 5th, has a long tradition of the town's districts making offerings of a certain amount of wax to the patron saints San Giusto and San Clemente The calendar of events organised in every corner of Tuscany is based around saints, and sees in the coming weeks celebrations of San Ranieri in Pisa (17 June) and the Madonna of Provenzano in Siena for the Palio on 2 July. Two events not to miss, along with the many celebrations that accompany the festivities: in Pisa on 16 June the riversides are lit up by thousands of candles for an impressive, fascinating and charming show of illuminations; in Siena, the Palio is preceded by rites and ceremonies that take you back in time and which prepare the "Campo" for the horse race itself.

The festivities remain unique in bringing residents and tourists onto the streets, attracting the interest of both sets of people, who for once watch the same thing at the same time and probably have the same sentiments of respect, curiosity and excitement that only these circumstances can incite. We suggest that you experience them first-hand, starting with the celebration of our saints, San Giusto and San Clemente, then continuing on to San Ranieri of Pisa and the Madonna dei Palii of Siena, scheduled for July and August. The Foresteria Hotel is the ideal destination – a crossroads indeed – for getting close up to the customs of this part of Tuscany.
